Journeys of the Spirits
Welcome
Thunderbird in Stone ©Joseph M. Triscari
Each one of us comes from a culture that at one time was acutely aware of the mysteries of nature and the wonders of the earth around them. Today, as with our ancestors before us, we are dependent on the earth for our survival. Part of the wisdom and worship of the Native American people has been their recognition of “places of power” or more popularly called, sacred sites.
This exhibit brings the ancient Native American petroglyph and ceremony sites together with spiritual landscapes and images of supernatural occurrences taking place in the present.
As production has continued over the years it has become obvious that it is that spiritual spark within all of us - red, black, yellow and white cultures that unites us as one people of our one world.
Please help us preserve sacred sites. “Preservation through education” for all sacred sites and the human race here and now.
Foreword
My first exposure to petroglyphs or ancient rock art was in February of 1990. I started taking photographs of ancient rock art, (petroglyphs), in the spring of 1990. My initial thought was that if I photographed these images in the right light, perhaps the images would come out beautiful. Right away I noticed a particularly good feeling that I had whenever I was at one of these ancient sacred sites.
Within a year of the initial three images, Tribute to a Chief, Monolith and Main Image aka Native Legend, I started to sell my photographs. One to the Board of Tourism for the state of Wyoming…Another image to the Bureau of Land Management. I met with the State of Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Fred Chapman, Applied Archeologist/Native American Liaison to the two million acre Wind River Indian Reservation where the Eastern Shoshone and the Arapahoe Native Americans call home in central western Wyoming. Fred said he liked my photography and introduced me to John, an Eastern Shoshone spiritual leader, Sundance Lodge Chief, Sweat Lodge Chief and healer or medicine man. We became fast friends because of our mutual interests and understanding of ancient rock art and sacred sites in general.
We will move through Journeys of the Spirits chronologically through time. There is no greater order to something then the sequence or order of events and how they happened through time. It is our head and heart felt intention that this work will help protect and preserve all sacred sites…forever.
